Astroworld Festival Tragedy: 8 Dead, Dozens Injured

At least eight people have died after a crowd crush at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival last Friday, 5 November.

The event at NRG Park in Houston, Texas saw hundreds of thousands of fans forcing their way in to get a better view of the 30-year-old rapper; but what was supposed to be an evening of fun and entertainment quickly turned into horror as fans fell underneath each other and many were trampled.

Local authorities confirmed that at least eight people had died – including a 14-year-old boy – and 25 others were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Videos of the unfolding tragedy went viral across social media. One video shows a fan receiving medical attention in the foreground, while Scott continues to perform on-stage with no signs of stopping the show or listening to fans gesturing to cut the performance.

The following morning, the beleaguered performer tweeted a statement expressing his condolences to the affected families and pledging his cooperation with the Houston Police Department, but fans made their anger known in response.

An investigation has been launched to determine what went wrong, while several lawsuits have been filed against Scott and event organisers. The legal papers from one of these lawsuits claim that the incident was “predictable and preventable.”
